Network

Working from home: a separate Wi-Fi for connected devices

If you work from home, your computer probably shares the same Wi-Fi as the TV, cameras, light bulbs and connected toys. The Government of Canada advises setting up a second Wi-Fi network for guests and connected devices, because those devices are often easier to hack. This protects your main network, the one that holds your work files.

To do In your router settings (the Internet box), turn on the "guest network". Connect the TV, cameras and your visitors to it. While you are there, replace the original Wi-Fi name and password with a long phrase.

Cameras

Tapo C200 camera: install the update

Researchers found flaws in TP-Link's Tapo C200 camera. They could let someone with access to your network take control of the camera and watch the live video. TP-Link fixed the problem with an update released in August.

To do In the Tapo app, open the camera settings and install the update (version 1.4.6 or newer). With Lorex it works the same way: Lorex app, choose the camera, then Settings, then Firmware.

Online

A delivery or toll text: do not tap the link

Ahead of Black Friday (November 27), scammers send fake texts: "your package is on hold", "you owe a toll". The link leads to a fake website that steals your card details or passwords. The message plays on urgency so that you tap without thinking.

To do Do not tap the link. Open the company's website or app instead, or call them. A real organization does not demand immediate payment by text. If you already tapped it, call your bank right away, then report it to the Anti-Fraud Centre: 1-888-495-8501.

Six checks for your security devices

Repeat once a year, and after buying a new device.

  • Change the default password on every camera, router and recorder.
  • Update device firmware; turn on automatic updates where they exist.
  • Turn on two-factor authentication for your camera app and your alarm account.
  • Put connected devices on a separate or guest Wi-Fi network.
  • Turn off remote access you do not use (UPnP, port forwarding).
  • Test the alarm and replace the batteries in the detectors.

How it works

  1. A call

We talk about your property and what worries you.

  2. A visit

I look at entrances, lighting, the network and weak points.

  3. A written plan

Equipment, placement, priorities and budget, which you can have carried out by whomever you choose.
